Adam & Bruce | Wedding at Old Ebbitt Grill | Washington DC Wedding Photographer
Adam and Bruce met in October 2009 in a rehearsal of D.C.'s Different Drummers, an LGBT Community Music Organization. The proposal occurred during their annual Labor Day weekend trip to Rehoboth Beach, DE in September 2013. The weather was horrible that day, and Adam's initial idea of proposing on the beach was squashed by rain. In order to not lose momentum, he modified his plan & proposed in their hotel room during a quiet moment during the weekend at the beach.
Adam and Bruce choose The Metropolitan Community Church of Washington DC as their ceremony location because of its founding principle of inclusiveness within the LGBT community. The church had large windows which let in some amazing light for a ceremony in front of 180 of Adam and Bruce's closest friends and family. Following the ceremony the reception begin at The Old Ebbitt Grill. The reception area features a large atrium with marble floors. I was so excited to be able to escape away from the reception with the newly married couple for some portraits with a breathtaking view of the city on the rooftop.

Omni Shoreham Wedding | Washington DC Wedding Photographer | Wedding at The Omni Shoreham Hotel
Tori and Anna met at a networking event in Arlington Virginia. They knew long before the proposal that they were commited to each other and were going to be together forever! The official engagement was on a grand yacht dinner boat in Montreal during a huge fireworks celebration for "World Cup Soccer". Tori got down on one knee and presented the ring!
Â
It was so great to meet with Tori and Anna at the same location that they had met each other to talk about their upcoming wedding plans. They had wanted a gazebo wedding and choose the perfect venue for it! The Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington DC has got to be one of my favorite venues. It features an elegant gazebo surrounded by beautiful gardens and lawns of green grass. It made an amazing backdrop for their intimate ceremony and cocktail hour. For their ceremony Tori and Anna walked down a grand staircase outside before walking down the isle in front of their closest friends and family. Wow this wedding was gorgeous! Afterwards we had time for some stunning portraits before the newly married couple took their limo to the Capital Elite Private Yacht for a reception with amazing views cursing along the Potomac River.
Â
After getting ready, Tori and Anna saw each other in their wedding dresses on their wedding day for the first time:

First Same Sex Wedding Ceremonies in The State of Virginia | Virginia Same-Sex Wedding Photographer
It was an amazing moment today when scrolling through my newsfeed on Facebook just after 10am. I began to see the social media blow up over The US Supreme Courts decision to refuse to hear cases from Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin and Indiana! With this historical move Same-Sex marriage has been legalized in the State of Virginia where the first marriage ceremonies were performed today!
Â
I was able to stop by The General District Courts in Fairfax, Virginia where the first same-sex ceremony was performed in Fairfax County!
Â
I snapped an iPhone shot of some of the supporters just outside the courthouse!
Â
I am so excited to capture the many upcoming same-sex ceremonies and weddings in Virginia! If you know anyone getting married I would love to have the honor of capturing their day!
A Surprise Proposal at The National Zoo | National Zoo Engagement Session
I had an amazing time working with Babak to plan the perfect proposal for his girlfriend of 11 years. YES 11 years! Of course she said yes! After first chatting with Babak over a few phones calls I got to know him personally and hear all about his ideas for his proposal. He told me his how his girlfriend loved animals and thought it would be the perfect idea to propose on a date to The National Zoo in Washington DC.
Â
The week prior to the big event I met with Babak at The Zoo to strategically plan out his proposal. We scouted locations and looked at all the exhibits to find the perfect spot. It was a challenge! I was looking for the perfect spot, a spot where I could capture the animals in the background and a spot with as few tourists as possible. This was my most challenging proposal to date however as a professional photographer my goal is to create these beautiful images!
Â
On the day of the Proposal I had arrived at The Zoo early and walked around. Babak had texted me to let me know that they had arrived and what parking lot they had parked in. I had positioned myself on a bench to wait for them to walk past me. As I acted like a tourist I followed them around keeping them into the corner of my eye until we arrived at the elephant exhibit and got into position. During this process Babak and I had communication through text message to make sure everything ran smoothly, although he said he was texting a family member (to cover up the surprise). I had texted Babak the signal that he was in the perfect location and the elephants where right behind him… the magic unfolded!

Paradise Springs Winery Surprise Birthday Party | Clifton, Virginia Photographer
I had the pleasure of photographing this beautiful family and the surprise birthday party they throw for Jeff's 69th birthday at Paradise Springs Winery in the town of Clifton, Virginia. To make it a surprise they choose to throw the party for Jeff's 69th instead of his 70th where he would likely be expecting something big! Their closest family and friends gathered traveling from all part of the country including places such as New Orleans.
Â
Paradise Springs Winery is located on 36 acres of land in Clifton, Virginia making it a great location for weddings and events or an outing with some local wine. The venue featured some great backdrop for family portraits with Jeff's family including vineyards and an eye popping red barn.
The party was held in this cute red barn seen in the images above! Wow it was perfect.

Justin & Joe | The Great Room at Savage Mill Wedding | Washington DC LGBT Wedding Photographer
I had an amazing time capturing this beautiful DIY wedding at The Great Room at Savage Mill in Maryland! Read along with the amazing wedding story forwarded to me by Justin & Joe to go along with these images:
Â
Our journey to marital bliss began long before Joe proposed on a warm evening on March 12th. It began 3 years prior when we decided to go "Steady" during a late night phone call at 12:03am.
Joe and I first met in December of 2009 at Gay District during a discussion that I facilitated. With humor and brevity being a major role in both of our lives, Joe and I initially bonded over MST3K: Mystery Science Theater 3000, an irreverent television show that rifted movies! While forming a love for each other, we also found our love for Sushi, picnic dates, volunteering and of course our love for old hollywood films and the actresses that starred in them.
With the last of these being a theme for our wedding, we were excited to share our love for each other and the honor and commitment it represents with our family and loved ones on May 25th, 2014 , when we finally said, "I DO!"
Justin and Joe prepared for their big day at the Courtyard Fort Meade BWI
Our 3-year anniversary was on March 12, 2012 and, after arriving home to surprise Joe with word of the new job I had just landed, we decided to go on a picnic at a beautiful park not far from our apartment. With blankets, candles, soft music, pizza and a poorly wrapped Wok we enjoyed our evening and exchanged presents. When time came for me to receive my Wok (which Joe replaced because his former roommate stole mine) he told me that there was something for me at the bottom of the box. I dug around in am mixture of newspaper and scholastic currency which Joes school uses as an incentive for students...and Joe uses as stuffing I found a small lump of wrapping paper. I opened it and thought, "Aww...what a beautiful ring...." . Then Joe grabbed it from me and got very serious. I don't remember what he said after that, he could have been giving me a recipe for blueberry muffins but I knew whatever it was...he wanted to give it to me and that made me feel special. Immediately after he slipped the ring on my finger a small group of people walked past us and smiled politely at our picnic. I called out, "Hello" They replied...and I yelled, "IM ENGAGED!!!!" Being an interracial Gay couple you can never know how people will respond and in that moment i didn't care. As luck would have it they were very excited for us and even stopped to take our photos so we could remember that evening forever.
Joe found The Great Room at Savage Mill in Washington in an ad in Bride and Groom magazine. I of course had to research them via wedding wire as we have all of our vendors and found amazing reviews and called in for a visit. The space was spectacular; huge floor to ceiling windows, vaulted ceiling, sconces, pillars, a balcony overlooking a beautiful forest...everything. We also loved the history (having been built in 1820) and how unique the space was.
Our reception theme was Old Hollywood / New Romantic. We incorporated bright colors, tangerine and lemon, with our love of black and white movies to create a unique space and feel. With the golden up lighting the reception was bathed in an old Hollywood glow which set the mood for the evening. Our DJ, DJ Myra, worked with us to incorporate beautifully timed period love songs for the cocktail hour and dinner. Love songs by Gershwin and Porter. Our first dance was to, "You've Got Me Wrapped Around Your Little Finger" modern take on an old jazz sound and feel. We worked quite extensively on our ceremony and reception decorations, and much of it was DIY, including the shadowbox portraits of old Hollywood actresses, flower mason jars, small jars coated in glitter with tealights, and what was quite the hit, three lounge spaces with themes from three of our most favorite movies to go with the Old Hollywood theme: Singin in the Rain, Pillow Talk, and Gaslight which we turned into photo booths. Each having an instant Polaroid camera and a guest book. We knew we couldn't be everywhere at once so we tried to have people capture their moments on the lounge spaces and write us well wishes to go along with them. With our good friends, Aaron and Rebecca, we made these unique places great opportunities for cuddling with your special someone, photo ops, or making new friends. Thankfully our photographer, Jon Fleming, was there to capture all of these moments beautifully and still allow our guests to maintain their moments uninterrupted. He even took the time to photograph all of the small DIY details throughout the wedding and ceremony! He was AMAZING!
The reception included a first dance with Joe and I, a dance with my mother, and a tossing of the groomsmaids bouquets to a crowd full of unattached people, both male and female! However, what was perhaps the greatest effect of the night, was a unity circle that was directed by our DJ, DJ Myra of HB Productions. This circle started with us in the center slow dancing. All of our guests joined hands around us to the sounds of Stevie Wonder's Overjoyed. Myra directed people to come towards us with personal messages throughout the song. The words that people had for us were so beautiful and touching; both of us started to tear up. Finally, towards the end of the song, people came together and enclosed us, and we really felt their love. It was an unexpectedly beautiful ending to our wedding.
