Why you should book an engagement session
Congratulations on your engagement! Now that you have the ring, you can begin wedding planning! As you’re wedding planning you may wonder if you should book an engagement session with your photographer.
Here are 3 reasons why you should book an engagement session:
1) Feel comfortable in front of the camera: An engagement session is a great way to get to know your photographer and feel comfortable being in front of the camera. This is great practice for the wedding day! During an engagement session, I coach my couples through posing and prompts to achieve flattering and beautiful photos! By your wedding date, you will be a pro in front of the camera!
2) Many uses for photos: Engagement photos have many uses! Most commonly, engaged couples use there engagement photos for “save the dates” and wedding invitations. Some couples also use their photos for a wedding day guest book, or personalized DIY wedding decor. There are endless options!
3) Variety in your photos: An engagement session is a great opportunity to have some causal photos as the wedding day may be more formal. Consider scheduling your engagement session in a different season then your wedding (for example, if your wedding will be in the fall, you can schedule your engagement session in the spring for a different look). When looking back at your wedding and engagement photos you will have variety in options for photos to use around your home.

Washington DC Cherry Blossom Engagement Session
The Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington DC is a popular time to plan an engagement session! Couples start booking and planning for the peak bloom as soon as summer the year before. Every spring Washington DC celebrates The National Cherry Blossom Festival at The Tidal Basin. The annual festival celebrates the 1912 gift of 3,000 cherry trees from the mayor of Tokyo to the city of Washington DC and honoring the friendship between The United States and Japan. Today the festival last about four weekends and attracts about 1.5 million tourist. The blossoms can be seen around The Tidal Basin, Jefferson Memorial, MLK Memorial, and many other areas.

Surprise Proposal at Jones Point Park in Alexandria, Virginia
Jones Point Park is one of my favorite parks in Alexandria, Virginia for surprise proposals and engagement sessions! The park is right along The Potomac River with a view of The National Harbor and the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. Jones Point Park is normally a quiet location with most people there just running or biking through. One of the most popular features of the park is the lighthouse that was built in 1855. It is the last remaining riverine lighthouse in Virginia. There are many great pathways, grassy areas, and the parking lot under the bridge is perfect for portraits as well. The grounds of the park are open from 6am-10pm but the best time for photos is a few hours before sunset. Each surprise proposal and engagement session I capture at Jones Point Park is different and unique as the park changes each season.
Jefferson Memorial Fall Surprise Proposal
I always love capturing surprise proposals at the memorials. The Jefferson Memorial is a great location to propose as it is normally not as crowded as The Lincoln Memorial. The surrounding Tidal Basin is always great for portraits and their is a perfect view of The Washington Monument!
Leesburg Virginia Fall Engagement Session
Last fall I captured Caleb's surprise proposal to his girlfriend Molly at The National Harbor! Now they are engagement and I was so excited to capture their engagement session in Leesburg Virginia. Downtown Leesburg has a lot of local shops and restaurants with colorful doors and brick. There is also a park area and some awesome ivy walls!
Leesylvania State Park Engagement Session Woodbridge, Virginia
Katie and Brian love to going water boarding and wanted to incorperate that into their engagement session! I was so excited when I heard this idea as I knew this was not going to be my average session. We started at Leesylvania State Park in Woodbridge, Virginia where I captured some portraits on land first. Leesylvania State Park is right along the Potomac River in Prince William County about 25 miles outside of DC. My favorite part of this park is the beach area. After portraits around the park we got on the water to capture images of Katie and Brian water boarding! Loving their save the date photo that they are using for their save the dates. I am excited to be documenting their wedding next fall!
National Gallery of Art Engagement Session
When Mark & John first messaged me they told me that they were looking for a unique location for their engagement session! Newly engaged, they were coming up to DC from Virginia Beach for a weekend trip and wanted an engagement session without the standard DC monuments or Cherry Blossoms. I recommended the National Gallery of Art which is one of the few spots in DC that allow indoor professional photography. I have captured several sessions at the gallery and always love to go back and capture something new as the galleries sometimes change. The gallery also makes a great location for if it rains. Congratulations on your engagement!

I had such a fun time capturing Ron & Joe together and am so excited to be apart of their wedding day later this year!
National Gallery of Art Engagement Session | Washington DC Engagement Session
I have always wanted to capture an engagement session at The National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. The Gallery is one of the few museums in DC where you can get away with indoor engagement sessions without a permit. The Gallery of Art is location next to The National Mall along Constitution Avenue between 3rd and 9th street. It consist of 2 separate buildings that connect underground. The museum is open year around to the public free of charge. I met with Will & Anna in the late afternoon/early evening and we started their session inside! It was a pleasure to get to know them as I got them comfortable in front of my camera. I am so excited for their 2016 wedding!
After an outfit change into a more causal outfit we walked through The National Sculpture Garden before they closed at 7pm. The gardens are located just off the National Mall between the National Gallery of Art's west building and The National Museum of Natural History.
