Best indoor locations for Surprise Proposal Photography in Washington DC
You have heard it before; You should always have a back up plan or Plan B! This certainly holds true when planning a photography session for surprise wedding proposals and engagement sessions at an outdoor location. It is a very good idea to have an indoor location as Plan B, especially if you are not able to reschedule the date of your photography session.
On the day of proposing, it could rain or during the winter months you could be faced with ice and/or snow! Washington DC has some great indoor locations and most have no admission fees.
Here are some tips on getting ready for an indoor location:
- If time is flexible, go as soon as the location opens to avoid crowds.
- Plan a weekday proposal/engagement session as weekdays tend to be less busy than weekends
Here is a list of my favorite indoor locations in Washington DC for surprise proposals and engagement sessions:
National Gallery of Art
The National Gallery of Art is a wonderful place for photography to capture your special moment. There are two buildings in addition to the National Gellery of Art. In one building you will find modern art and in the other building there are mostly classical paintings. Although both would be ideal, the building with modern art has more natural light. The LED Tunnel makes for a cool photograph!
Open Monday-Saturday from 10:00am-5:00pm and Sunday from 11:00am-6:00pm.
National Portrait Gallery
The National Portrait Gallery's Kogod Courtyard is located in the center of the building. This location is wonderful as it has a lot of space, natural light and indoor plants. Other parts of the gallery are great for portraits as well. During the holiday season the courtyard is quite festive!
Open Daily from 11:30am-7:00pm.
Botanical Gardens
The Botanical Gardens are located right near the Capital Building. The walkway in the tropics exhibit is an ideal spot for your special moment as it tends to be more private and a there is a lot of natural light coming in through the windows. To add to your photos, you can end the photography session with a photo outside with the Capital Building in the background.
The Botanical Gardens are open daily from 10:00am-5:00pm including weekends and holidays.
Library of Congress
The Library of Congress is another great place for photos with its beautiful marble floors and spectacular pillars.
Once inside, you must go through security and then walk up to the main area. The top level is suggested as the best place portraits!
Open Monday-Saturday from 8:30am-4:30pm.
Other location Ideas
Restaurant Proposal - proposing at the resturant where you went on your first date or a frequent date spot is also a popular choice. Restaurant proposals may require more advance planning and can be a bit restricted for portraits afterwards if its raining outside. Using the overhang outside the restaurant is an option or a bar area or other parts of the restaurant such as private rooms if the restaurant allows and has this option.
National Building Museum - The National Building museum has an entrance fee but always has cool exhibits that can make for unique photos.
Union Station - The front of Union Station has a great outdoor area that is covered by the overhang. Inside is also a great spot for indoor photos however Union Station can be busy during peak travel times.
Hotel - A hotel room, hallways or the lobby area can be used as a great indoor location as well with the hotels permission. This works well for couples out of town staying in a nice hotel. Some hotels also have proposal packages where they will place flowers or a bottle of champagne in the room for you when you check in. Below are some shots from The Ritz Carlton Hotel in Georgetown where I captured a surprise proposal during the holidays!

Washington DC Botanical Gardens Surprise Proposal Photography
Captured this surprise proposal recently in the tropics exhibit at The Botanical Gardens in Washington DC! During the day of the surprise proposal it was raining outside so we had to change to an indoor location. The botanical gardens made a great spot covered from the rain and cold of winter. The tropics exhibit was humid but at the time is was the spot with the least amount of tourist and most ideal location was up on the walkway. After the marriage proposal we walked through all the exhibits to capture portraits. The botanical gardens is a great indoor location for surprise proposals during the winter or a plan B in case of rain outdoors. Other great indoor location include: The National Gallery of Art, National Portrait Gallery, Library of Congress and Union Station.

Jefferson Memorial Tidal Basin Surprise Proposal & Engagement Session
The Jefferson Memorial is always an iconic location for a surprise proposal in Washington DC. In front of The Tidal Basin is a great spot with a view of The Washington Monument. By proposing in front of The Tidal Basin you can avoid larger crowds of tourist. After the surprise marriage proposal we walked to the sides of the memorial to capture portraits. Congratulations to Joe and Allison on their engagement!

Washington DC Surprise Proposal & Engagement Session at The Wharf
A recent surprise proposal captured at the waterfront of The Wharf in Washington DC! The Wharf is Washington DC's newest hotspot! It contains restaurants, bars, park area, waterfront views, mixed residential and business area and a concert venue. This is an ideal location for a surprise proposal that feature some great locations for portraits afterwards which also makes it a great engagement session location. When planning a surprise proposal or engagement session at The Wharf you can check out their events calendar to make sure there are no large events that would draw large crowds of people. By avoiding times when there are events and busy times we can make sure there is plenty of space to get photos without people in them. The Wharf has a lot of street parking around and is also assessable by Uber and Metro. The pathways along the waterfront or on the docks are some of the best spots for a proposal. Around the spring and summer time there are some great areas with flowers and plants as well as fountains. Going under the lights of the concert venue also makes for a cool shot.

Washington DC Surprise Proposal & Engagement Session at Georgetown Waterfront
A Georgetown Waterfront surprise proposal and engagement session! Georgetown is one of my favorite locations for surprise proposal and engagement photography since it offers so much between the park, waterfront area, urban area, bridges, and the Georgetown canal. This proposal took place at the waterfront! Afterwards we walked by some of the best spots for portraits including the restaurant where this couple went one one of their first dates! Picking a location that has meaning is a great ideal when planning a surprise proposal! The bridge that goes over the canal is also a great spot to go for portraits.

A Georgetown Surprise Proposal | Washington DC Proposal Photographer
I had the pleasure of working with Alex to help plan his proposal! After the big proposal we captured some beautiful images in the surrounding area:

Tips for Hiring a Proposal Photographer | Washington DC Surprise Proposal Photographer
I love photographing couples in love and it really excites me when I'm able to capture a surprise marraige proposal! More then just photographing these exciting moments I enjoy being able to collaborate and plan out the proposal and all its details. From the location, to the timing, to how it will all go down a lot of planning goes into capturing these memories.
I developed a few tips to choosing a photographer to photograph your proposal (a moment that only happens once!)
Choose an experienced photographer. Has the photographer photographed proposals before? Ask to view portfolios of images of recent proposals and view there work. Make sure you have confidence in their work. Proposals are a differnt ballgame. A photographer cannot pose or create the moment. He/she must know the proper planning needed to ensure the moment can be captured the best way possible!
Planning. Make sure your photographer is taking the time to work with you to plan your proposal. Unlike controlled engagement or portrait sessions much more planning and expertise must go into a proposal session. You should be confident that your photographer will be able to successfully capture the moment through proper planning.
Ask Questions. Ask your photographer as many questions as you'd like. There is no such thing as a dumb question. Most couples have never hired a professional photographer before. Be sure you feel comfortable.
