Georgetown University Fall Engagement Session
When choosing an engagement session location it’s always a great idea to consider locations that have meaning to you as a couple! Perhaps a place where you first met, a frequent date location, the location where you first said “I love you”, or the surprise proposal location! For this engagement session I shot at Georgetown University where this couple first met. Earlier in the year I had captured the surprise proposal at the Georgetown Waterfront and I am excited to be capturing wedding day coming soon in New Jersey! Once wedding day comes it will be my third time photographing Bryan & Carla! It’s always an honor to work with a couple through the proposal to the engagement session and all the way to wedding day! By working with the same photographer you can build that relationship and trust to feel more comfortable in front of the camera. You also get the same constant photography style for all your images.

Old Town Alexandria Waterfront Engagement Session
Old Town Alexandria is a popular engagement session location that has a lot to offer! The waterfront, boats, cobblestone pathways, and Wilkes Street Tunnel are all great spots to stop by for photos. This also makes it a popular wedding location with many venues in the area. During the winter Old Town also has holiday lights along the streets for extra decor. This session was during mid November where it was not yet too cold for outdoor photos. We stopped by some of my favorite locations:

Washington DC Tidal Basin Cherry Blossom Engagement Session
Many couples choose The National Cherry Blossom Festival at The Tidal Basin and Jefferson Memorial as an option for engagement sessions and surprise proposals in Washington DC! The blossoms reach peak bloom each year sometime between late March through early April. The festival celebrates the 1912 gift of 3,000 cherry trees from the mayor of Tokyo to the city of Washington DC and honoring the friendship between The United States and Japan. Today the festival last about four weekends and attracts about 1.5 million tourist. The blossoms can be seen around The Tidal Basin, Jefferson Memorial, MLK Memorial, and many other areas. The best time to schedule a session is sunrise when you will find the least amount of tourist. Mostly there are just photographers and runners out at this time!
By scheduling a sunrise session we can get some cool shots with off camera lighting like the first few photos in this post. This will give some variety in your images. At this time The Jefferson Memorial was so empty we were able to get some wide shots without anyone else in them!
Reviews
“Jon shot a surprise engagement for us at cherry blossoms up in DC. His efforts were outstanding. Throughout the process (3 months) we kept in contact with him always responding quickly. Jon arrived extremely early the day of the engagement which was good because we got there early as well. Jon knew exactly where he wanted to take pictures but also asked us several times if we had any requests. He sent us a few pictures the same day and we got the full album in less than a week. I highly recommend him.”

Washington DC Surprise Proposal & Engagement Session at Georgetown Waterfront
A Georgetown Waterfront surprise proposal and engagement session! Georgetown is one of my favorite locations for surprise proposal and engagement photography since it offers so much between the park, waterfront area, urban area, bridges, and the Georgetown canal. This proposal took place at the waterfront! Afterwards we walked by some of the best spots for portraits including the restaurant where this couple went one one of their first dates! Picking a location that has meaning is a great ideal when planning a surprise proposal! The bridge that goes over the canal is also a great spot to go for portraits.

Georgetown Waterfront Surprise Proposal & Engagement Session
I photographed this proposal just before sunset at The Georgetown Waterfront along the wooden pathway that runs by the water. It was the perfect shot capturing the presentation of the ring and ring being placed on the finger for the first time! After the surprise proposal we captured additional portraits after sunset. I love photographing couples at night with off camera flash and getting creative with lighting! Here are some of my favorite images! I am excited to be capturing this couples wedding in 2019! Always a pleasure when I get to photograph a couples love story from the surprise proposal to the wedding day.

Wilkes Street Tunnel Engagement Session in Old Town Alexandria
I captured this engagement session in Old Town Alexandria and one of my favorites spots there: Wilkes Street Tunnel. Wilkes Street Tunnel is a pedestrian only tunnel that is popular for running and biking through but also makes for amazing photos! I love to shoot in front of the tunnel and then go inside for some silhouette shots! After the tunnel you can walk to Old Town nearby for more amazing locations!
In the middle of our session we got photobombed by the police!

Captured another amazing surprise proposal at The Jefferson Memorial! We walked to the side of the memorial for portraits and I am so happy spring is starting so we had some greenery and color on the trees! Old Town Manassas Harris Pavilion Surprise Proposal & Engagement Session
I captured this surprise proposal at Harris Pavilion in Old Town Manassas at night! Shooting surprise proposals at night is very challanging as many times I have to use off camera flash to properly light the couple! Everything worked out perfectly! After the proposal moment we got some great portraits around Old Town Manassas before the newly engaged couple went off to celebrate!
I received this testimonial from the newly engaged couple! - "I contacted Jon within a week of my intended proposal date. He was quick to respond and extremely flexible in the time, date, and location. Jon was so professional and so involved in making our moment special. The temperature was COLD and it was very windy, but Jon seemed to enjoy every minute of photographing our night. And we received our photos immediately. It was an awesome experience! We look forward to working with him again!"
Washington DC Lincoln Memorial Surprise Proposal & Cherry Blossom Engagement Session
The Lincoln Memorial is the perfect spot for a DC surprise proposal with an amazing view of The Washington Memorial in between the columns of the The Lincoln. I captured this picture perfect proposal in the middle of Cherry Blossom season where we got super lucky with out tourist walking into this amazing shot! After the proposal we walked over to The FDR Memorial and Tidal Basin for some Cherry Blossom photos as they were in peak bloom. The Cherry Blossom Festival is a spring celebration honoring the gift of the Japanese Cherry Trees to The US from Japan in 1912. The trees celebrated the friendship between the US and Japan. This is a super busy time of year for photographers as many couples schedule engagement sessions and photography sessions at the blossoms!
Thank you for this amazing testimonial!
"Jon was excellent. Although I wasn't the one planning the proposal (I'm the bride :) ), I cannot get over how amazing the photos were that Jon took. My friends didn't believe me when I showed them the proposal picture and told them that it was taken in the real moment - they thought it was recreated afterwards! Jon was so natural to be around and you can really tell how much he loves taking photos, finding the right angle, etc. My favorite part was how quick he was to send a few photos after the proposal - I was excited to use his beautiful photo to announce my engagement and I was so happy I didn't have to wait long!"
Washington DC Cherry Blossom Jefferson Memorial Surprise Proposal & Engagement Session
One of my favorite times of the year in Washington DC is when The Cherry Blossoms are in full peak. So many photographers, couples, and tourist flock to The Tidal Basin area for photos of the blossoms. This year I captured several surprise proposals and engagement sessions at The Cherry Blossoms, this one on one of the busiest days where the weather was perfect! With so many people out we got lucky with no one in the surprise proposal shot! Afterwards I got creative to capture portraits without tourist in them. By walking around to less busy spots and shooting creatively I was able to get some awesome shots!

Georgetown Surprise Proposal & Engagement Session
Captured another surprise proposal along The Georgetown Waterfront with The Key Bridge in the background! One of my favorite spots in DC for proposals. I am starting to lose track of how many proposals I have captured here! I loved capturing shots with the birds out on this session.
Georgetown Waterfront Engagement Session at Night
I love photographing at night when I can get super creative with lighting! I have photographed engagement sessions, surprise proposals, and weddings many times in Georgetown & Georgetown Waterfront but photographing at night is completely different! After this surprise proposals I captured some portraits around Georgetown with Rosslyn in the background and other sites.
Georgetown Waterfront Park Surprise Proposal
Georgetown & Georgetown Waterfront Park is one of my favorite Washington DC locations for engagement sessions & surprise proposals! I captured Spencer's surprise proposal to his girlfriend Amanda over the winter along the pathway directly next to the water. The surprise reaction was picture perfect! Holiday lights and decorations around Georgetown made for some great portrats after the proposal. I am so excited to share these images.
Georgetown Waterfront Surprise Proposal & Engagement Session
I captured another surprise proposal in Washington DC along the Georgetown Waterfront! The Georgetown Waterfront Park has a great view of The Key Bridge which connects Georgetown to Rosslyn, Virginia. This is a perfect spot for a surprise proposal with minimal tourist and an amazing view. During the winter Georgetown has it's Georgetown Glow Festival which features many light exhibits scattered around the area which makes for some unique photos. We also stopped by one of my favorite bridges for more portraits. Here are some of my favorite images! I love captureing surprise proposals and the emotional reactions involved!
Great Falls Park Winter Engagement Session
Sean & Walter love hiking so they wanted to have their engagement session at Great Falls Park on the Maryland side in the winter on a snowy day! The snow coverage trails and rocks made for some great shots! We braved the cold and it was totally worth it! Great Falls Park is just 15 miles outside of Washington DC along the Virginia & Maryland border. The park is known for it's views, hiking, and history.
Jones Point Park Engagement Sessions
Jones Point Park in Alexandria, Virginia is a popular location for engagement sessions and surprise proposals! The park is right along The Potomac River with a view of The National Harbor and the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. It's super easy to get to by car and there is always parking avliable. Jones Point Park is normally a quiet location with most people there just running or biking through. One of the most popular features of the park is the lighthouse that was built in 1855. It is the last remaining riverine lighthouse in Virginia. The Lighthouse is not open for the public to go inside but it makes for great portraits with it in the background. There are many great pathways, grassy areas, and the parking lot under the bridge is perfect for portraits as well. The grounds of the park are open from 6am-10pm but the best time for photos is a few hours before sunset. Each surprise proposal and engagement session I capture at Jones Point Park is different and unique as the park changes each season.
Washington DC Engagement Session at The Capitol
This couple got engaged on the steps of The Supreme Court! After the surprise proposal we walked around to capture these portraits in front of The Capitol, on the steps of The Supreme Court, and in front of The Library of Congress! All these locations made for a perfect Washington DC engagement session!

Washington DC National Mall & Tidal Basin Engagement Session
I always love taking my clients to The National Mall & Tidal Basin for engagement sessions. The National Mall & all The Memorials is always a popular location for surprise proposals and engagement sessions. Each time I make a trip here for a session I love having the challenge of creating new images in the same locations. This was a session right after a surprise proposal on the steps of The Jefferson Memorial. Walking around the Tidal Basin we found many great spots for portraits without tourist in the way.
